GreenE Ramsay
Also Known By:
- Green Thomas Jefferson Ramsay
1846 - 1954
One of the first things to note about Green is his middle name “Thomas Jefferson.” Interviews with Green’s descendants describe Green as tall, light- skinned, and handsome. Green was born a slave, along with his parents and brother, George. Census records indicate that he was born in Mississippi. After the Civil War, he and his parents along with George stayed and worked on the land with the slave master’s wife, who helped them obtain land for themselves. He was married twice: first to a lady by the name of Edith, with whom he had eight children: Bat, Caroline, Mary Catherine, Laura, Charlie, Eddie, Wyatt and Amy. He later married a lady named Jane Myers and to this union they had five children: Pearlie, Shumphert, Rufus, Almeda, and Millie (Reddix). As you can see, Green created a very large family; can you imagine the number of off-springs that were generated by his children?
Per census records and other resources, after the civil war, Green lived in Ramsey Springs and farmed his land till his death. His body was laid to rest in the Ramsey Springs Cemetery. Green’s land was divided between his two families, 100 acres to his first family and 100 to his second family. Letters provided by family members indicate that he had problem with his eyes. Some of his descendants moved to Ocean Springs and Vancleave, others went to Biloxi, Wiggins, and northern Mississippi.
